  • Chokusetsu-ho Gyotaku
An Introduction to Japanese Fish Printing
    with Stephen DiCerbo (NPS Member)

    Level: Beginner
    Prerequisites: none
    Maximum class enrollment: 10
at The Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington
    Friday, July 15  8:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Learn Chokusetsu-ho, the direct method of Gyotaku, Japanese fish printing. A relatively new art form, Gyotaku came to America in the 1950s and its history can be traced back a couple hundred years. Used to identify species of fish and record size of catches, gyotaku is often seen as a parallel to Taxidermy. It has evolved into an art form and unique type of illustration, and techniques and methodology continue to be refined today. A form of relief printmaking, it allows for an intimate familiarity with the morphology of the fish.

All materials provided, but bring any preferred brushes for working with ink washes.  $20 Materials fee.

Cost of workshop is $100 with a $20 materials Fee, no membership required.

The technique of botanical printing allows us to capture the structural and textural wonders of the natural world and to transfer them directly onto textiles. Botanical prints record the physical appearance of a plant specimen by "inking" the actual surface and then imprinting it on fabrics.

Class begins with an introduction to nature printing techniques, using acid and fiber-reactive dyes and methods of fixation. Fabric choices, ranging from plain silks to linen damask, composition and pattern are also covered. Students print many samples which may be incorporated into beautiful art pieces.

Tuition [Non Credit] and Lab Fee: $245.00
